True fans of the Eurovision Song Contest
The Toppers, Gordon and René Froger, are true fans of the Eurovision Song Contest and have, for many years now, been closely following its development. Their best memories of this event originate from the time that they were little boys sitting and watching the contest with their families on cosy evenings.With pen and notepad on their lap and a bag of crisps close at hand, they awarded points to each song and then compared these to the points given by the jury.
During their concerts over the past four years, the Toppers rendered many medleys of old and new Eurovision Song Contest songs. “Our participation is like a dream come true and an absolute milestone in our careers.We are enormously proud that we are representing The Netherlands at the biggest music event in the world and our trip to Moscow is going to be one big and “over the top” spectacle that no one can ignore.”
With their song Shine The Toppers believe that finally, after all these years, The Netherlands can break through to the finals. The song is about the fact that if people have a positive attitude they can solve nearly every problem.
A successful tradition uniting people
What began in May 2004 as a one-off event with three successful Dutch solo artists, has now grown into a very successful tradition. Toppers in Concert – René Froger, Gordon and Gerard Joling – has broken each and every record since.
This is the show that thousands and thousands of people look forward to each year. More than 850,000 people have enjoyed these shows in The Amsterdam Arena. During these high energy shows, the audience merge to become one big happy family.
The Toppers are very successful More than 1,500,000 CDs and DVDs sold (all number one positions in the charts) and fourteen completely sold out shows in the Amsterdam Arena remind us of this success.
2009 is the year in which the Toppers celebrate their 5th anniversary.It is also the year in which The Toppers proudly announced Jeroen van der Boom as being the new Topper. He has now taken the place of former Topper, Gerard Joling.
Rene Froger
René’s (born on the 5th of November in 1960) professional career started off in 1987 with his hit single Winter In America. From that moment on, René became more popular than ever. Numerous hit singles followed which made him a well established artist in the Dutch showbiz.
His regular concerts transformed into mega-events like the ones in the Ahoy venue. René was the first Dutch artist to do three consecutive "sold-out" shows in the Kuip Stadium. After his four stadium concerts in the Amsterdam Arena in 2004, René committed himself for a few years to the intimacy of theatre.He also further developed the concept of Toppers in Concert. In the meantime, he worked on a new musical adventure and launched his first Dutch album in 2007. The first single, taken from this album, stormed the Dutch charts.
Gordon
All-round artist Gordon (born on the 6th of July in 1968), started his professional career with the number one hit single Kon Ik Maar Bij Je Zijn, many more hit singles followed. A star was born! From that moment on, he starred in many radio and television shows. Because of his special sense of humour, he is cherished by large audiences.
For more than 18 years now, he is a successful and well-respected artist and besides his solo and Toppers activities as a singer, he knows how to surprise Holland, time after time, with his hilarious and innovative radio- and television programmes. Also, as a juror of successful television programmes like Idols and the X-factor, he knows how to criticise the candidates in a humorous manner but remains sincere and professional. In 2008, Gordon launched his new solo CD A Song For You with an ode to Donny Hathaway. In the meantime, he also published his first book , a collection of his columns which he wrote for a national newspaper and various magazines.
Jeroen van Der Boom
Jeroen van der Boom (born on the 22nd of June in 1972) has been performing since he was twelve years old and can be rightfully called a megatalent. During his college years, he already became a very popular singer/musician until he made his debut in 1992 as a television host. However, performing as a singer always remained his passion and out of hundreds of candidates, he was selected for leading roles in the musicals Barcelona and Novo Mundo. He was also gifted with an impersonation talent and this was revealed in the very popular television/animation series Café De Wereld.
In 2007, Jeroen scored two consecutive number one hit singles. He also starred in Lionel Ritchie’s Symphonica In Rosso in the Gelredome Venue in Arnhem. Since November last year, Jeroen joins René Froger and Gordon as the new Topper.

Six beautiful and talented girls from Estonia are representing the tiny Baltic country this year. They want to give a breathtaking show and think 'it doesn't matter whether to sing for your grandmother or on the stage of the Eurovision Song Contest'.
Urban Symphony - combining electronic sounds with acoustic instruments
Urban Symphony was formed two years ago, when singer Sandra Nurmsalu took part in Estonian Television’s most popular young soloist competition Kaks Takti Ette, which included a bands' round. That was what sparked the idea to combine modern electronic music with acoustic instruments to find new and sometimes surprising resonance and colour.
Urban Symphony comprises of the singer and violinist Sandra Nurmsalu, cellists Johanna Mängel and Mari Möldre and viola player Mann Helstein, all of whom have been deeply involved in music since childhood. For performing their Eurovision Song Contest entry, Marilin Kongo and Mirjam Mesak joined the group to sing back vocals.
Urban Symphony girls, who between them have over 40 years of experience in playing musical instruments, admit that as they are young they grant themselves the right to reconsider things, to start their quest all over again or to alter course completely. They are interested in beauty in its purest meaning. The music of Urban Symphony should have a fairy-tale-like effect on listeners – simple, sincere and dreamy.
Sandra Nurmsalu
Urban Symphony’ singer is Sandra Nurmsalu. 20-year-old Sandra has two passions – singing and violin playing and Urban Symphony has given her the chance to combine these. Ten years of violin studies in classic music have also taken her to the roots of Estonian folk music – for seven years, she played and sang in folk group Pillipiigad giving concerts and performing at festivals all over Estonia and in Europe. For 3 years she has also been part of folk band Virre.
Johanna Mängel
Johanna Mängel is 18 years old and cello studies have been part of her life for twelve years. Outside her classical music studies, Johanna has thanks to her inherent curiosity played cello not only in various local and international orchestras, but also in rock bands – well-known Estonian bands Aides, Slide-Fifty, Vennaskond. Besides playing musical instruments, Johanna is interested in composing, fashion and film, and she also writes critical reviews of various music events for music magazines.
Mari Möldre
The baby of the band is the 16-year-old Mari Möldre, who started practicing cello already at the age of six. Despite her young age, she has always been dedicated to music, for besides cello playing she has been involved in singing and piano playing, taken part in various projects and been a part of several musical collectives. Numerous performances have taken her to different places in the world – even Australia! When she has time left over from school and music activities, Mari takes an interest in architecture and drawing.
Mann Helstein
Mann Helstein is Urban Symphony’s viola player. She started her studies at the age of ten, learning to play violin. By today, the 21-year-old Mann has as a member of various international orchestras travelled all over Europe. In addition, she is currently studying quality and environmental management.
Marilin Kongo
Back vocal singer Marilin Kongo is 22. She got introduced to music through dancing, which she has been practicing since the age of five. In addition to dancing and singing, she is very closely engaged in a multitude of musical projects.
Mirjam Mesak
The 18-year-old Mirjam Mesak is also singing back vocals. She has been actively involved in music for ten years and at the moment she is studying classic song besides preparing to finish secondary school. Mirjam first appeared on the Eurovision Song Contest stage at the age of twelve, when she was part of an interval act at the Eurovision Song Contest held in Tallinn in 2002. In Helsinki in 2006, Mirjam sang back vocals to Gerli Padar in the Estonian entry Partners In Crime.

Biography
The creative genius of Svetlana Loboda performs for Ukraine at this year's contest. She's a local icon in many areas, starting with singing and ending with script writing and fashion.
Svetlana Loboda - singer, composer, musical and fashion producer, script writer
Svetlana Loboda was born on the 18th of October, 1982 in Kyiv, the 2005 Host City of the Eurovision Song Contest.
Studying piano, conducting, variety and jazz vocal, having the experience of composer, leading role actress in musical, TV host, designer, photographer, singer in Ukraine’s, Russia’s and CIS most popular girls band and finally a solo artist, in her 27th year Svetlana has come up as one of the top music stars in her country.
From very early ages the future queen of epatage showed a strong tension for music and acting, showing the real home musicals for her parents and relatives on family holidays. In the specialized music school Svetlana studied piano and at the same time mastered the art of singing and conducting.
Having finished music school Svetlana didn’t give up her music studies and entered the department of variety and jazz singing at Kyiv Variety And Circus Academy. It was the time, when she become a member of the band Cappuccino. In 2003 Svetlana Loboda participated in the casting for the first ever Ukrainian professional musical The Equator, where she got the leading role of Mirana.
In December 2003, Svetlana started a new band – Catch. She works out the repertory and stage costumes for the band. That was her first professional experience of composer and designer.
In 2004 Svetlana went to the casting for VIA Gra band, well-known in Eastern Europe and having successful gigs in Japan and other countries. Thanks to her vocal, choreography, and magnetic image she managed to surpass nearly 500 rivals and became a new soloist of the band. Svetlana’s first appearance as a member of the band was a special guest performance in the TV-show Star Factory.
At the end of November 2004 Svetlana Loboda started her solo career.
Svetlana’s first solo music video was Cherno-Belaya Zima (Black-and-white Winter). In a year, in November 2005, she released her debut album Ty Ne Zabudesh (You Won’t Forget).
In 2006, Svetlana worked as the presenter for the TV-programme ShowMania and in 2007 become the host of Miss CIS.
In Spring 2008, the singer released the album Ne Macho (Not Macho).
April 2008 saw the launch of her own fashion line wearing the name F*ck The Macho. The scandalous, as it may seem, the idea became the popular trend and stylish concept, expressing social protest against false glamorous trends and sticky stereotypes.
The creative potential of Svetlana doesn’t end up with the described! Later on, in Autumn 2008, she tries herself as the script writer for the music video Za Chto (For What) which proved to be a success.

Albania will have one of the youngest performers this year but none the less a total professional, having won several prizes and having a career of more than six years!
Kejsi Tola
She was born on the 5th of February in 1992 and will now represent Albania in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest.
Kejsi is studying in the artistic lyceum of Jordan Misja in Tirana.
Her career started when she was 11-years-old in the Young Voices of Albanian Festival Song contest winning the first prize, and two time winner of the young voices of the Shkodra Festival Contest.
In the first Contest of Young Geniuses she was one of the ten finalists. In 2008 she won the Best New Artist prize in the Friday Fever Song Contest of Albanian modern music, and in 2008 winner of the Albanian Radio Television Song Contest with the song Carry Me In Your Dream which will represent Albania at Europe's favorite TV-show.
“I love singing and this is very important for me. Music gives me an inner strength, which I sometimes don’t show up in my daily life, but that comes out when on stage.” These are the words of Kejsi waiting to sing her dream in the Olimpiyski Indoor Arena in Moscow.

Biography
One autumn morning in a small village in the south of Moldova a young woman prayed to her god; she asked: “Give me, My God, a girl who would become a singer!”. So on October, 28th 1974 in the village of Саnia in the Kantemirsky region, Nelly Ciobanu entered this life.
She is a bright, beautiful girl with captivating charisma; from her first moments on stage she has stunned her audiences with her unique ability to capture a hall with her resonant voice.
She made her professional debut in the Morning Star competition in 1994, which ended with a spectacular victory for the 19 year old singer; she was awarded the first prize and attracted general admiration, both from spectators and professionals. Eminent musicians were heard to say "This girl has a brilliant future".
Following her performance in the 1996 competition Maluri de Prut, she was acclaimed as the best young pop singer in the country. In 1997 at the contest Mamaia, 97 Nelly was awarded the third prize, and with it, recognition of her musical and artistic talents in Romania.
After the Sea of Friends competition in 1998, Nelly’s silver voice echoed along the Black Sea coast of Yalta. She took the third prize in the contest and won the permanent devotion of the audience. The special fire of the Moldavian singer and her Intriguing voice made her a general favorite with a second place at the contest Voice of Asia in 1999. The same year Nelly received the first prize at the contest Vladimir Ivasiuk and the recognition of the Ukrainian public. In 2000, at the prestigious Slavianskij Bazaar contest in Belarus, Nelly created a fantastic atmosphere, leading to the first prize in the festival. The crowd enthusiastically bade farewell to "the Moldavian nightingale" with a standing ovation.
All of Moldova held its breath as it watched Nelly’s performance at the New Wave contest in Jurmala in 2003. Even though she won the second prize, all of the participants, spectators, and juries declared that the Moldavian singer Nelly Ciobanu was the most important discovery of the festival.
The creative career of Nelly Ciobanu has developed steadily; she sings on the same stage with Western and Russian stars and her concerts in Eastern and Western Europe, China and Korea are planned for years in advance. Nelly Ciobanu became the face and pride of Moldavian artistic expression; wherever her voice is heard, people talk of the small country in the Centre of Eastern Europe with respect.
Over the last few years the singer has released four albums, with a fifth in preparation. Now she will present the song Hora from Moldova at the 2009 Eurovision contest. The music was composed by Vyacheslav Daniljuk with lyrics by Andrey Gadzhiu and Nelly herself.
Despite her youth, Nelly is the most authoritative singer in Moldova confirmed by the VIP award, offered every six years. In 2001 Nelly Ciobanu received the rank of Honoured Artist of Moldova. Since 2007, she has hosted one of the most popular TV music programs in Moldova Vedete La Bis .
Three years ago Nelly became a happy mum, and she dedicates her performance in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 to her small daughter who became for her the most important audience in the world.

Biography
Sasha Song will represent Lithuania in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow. The Lithuanian artist has received many prizes and is responsible for many chart-busters in the country!
Sasha Song or Sasha Son?
While in Lithuania, Sasha Song (Birth name Dmitry Shavrov - Dima Savrovas and in Russian Sasha Son) has established himself as a young solo artist and at the age of twelve had consequently released a solo album, Svajoniu Laivas (The Ship of Dreams).
His legendary song Mamai (To Mother), which was written for Sasha by very respected Lithuanian musicians Ovidijus Vysniauskas and Gintaras Zdebskis, made him known all around Lithuania and has become one of the most significant and influential songs in Lithuanian music history.
In 1995, Sasha received a Bravo award for Metu Atradimas" (New-comer of the year).
He won numerous international competitions throughout Europe and received a letter of gratitude from the President of the Republic of Lithuania for his achievements for the country.
After a period of eight years in London where he had studied music Sasha has returned home and together with his music partner Hywel Sam received a Grand Prize at the international music contest - Palanga 2005.
His first single in twelve years Ne Uletaj featuring SEL reached number one in the Baltic Russian Radio Top 10 songs list and remained in the Top 5 for 13 weeks and in the top 10 for 14 weeks.
In 2008, he was in the top three in the Lithuanian national selection with the song Miss Kiss and was one of the favorites to win to contest. That same year Sasha took part in the LNK Muzikos Akademija TV talent show and was also in the top 3.
In 2009, Sasha finaly gained public recognition. His song Pasiklydęs Žmogus or Love was voted as the best song in Lithuania and had consequently received the right to represent his country in the Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow.

Sakis Rouvas was born in Corfu. Since 1996, he has the largest fan club, with thousands of members from all parts of the world.
In 1997, Sakis along with Turkish Burak Kut threw a binational concert on the Green Line in Cyprus, for which he won the Ipekci International Award for Understanding and Cooperation.
